Cajas de cartón: relatos de la vida peregrina de un niño campesino
by Francisco Jiménez (United States) Autobiography, 125 pages
(Originally published as The Circuit in 1997)
This is the compelling story of a farmworker family existence in Southern California of the fifties, as told in the voice of the boy Francisco Jiménez. The family endures poverty and squalid living conditions as they follow the harvests from one town to the next. “Panchito” starts work in the fields while still a small child and struggles to learn English and stay in schools despite constant uncertanties and fear of deportation. A very good choice for intermediates with limited experience reading in Spanish. (See also Senderos fronterizos by Francisco Jiménez.)
For mid-intermediate and above; Readers of all ages.
