Antes de ser libres

by Julia Álvarez (The Dominican Republic)
Novel, 184 pages

Anita never questioned her freedom and safety living in the Dominican Republic. But by her 12th birthday in 1960, most of her relatives have emigrated to the United States, her Tío Toni has mysteriously disappeared, and the government’s secret police terrorize her remaining family because of their suspected opposition to the brutal Trujillo dictatorship.  From renowned author Julia Alvarez comes an historically accurate and unforgettable tale of repression, perseverance, and one girl’s struggle to be free.

I just finished reading Antes de Ser Libre with a friend. We would meet every week and take turns reading aloud in Spanish and discussing the meaning of the text. It was a great exercise for learning new words and phrases. It also helped me recognize preterit, imperfect, and subjunctive cases. The book itself is well-written, a story told from the point of view of a 13 yr old girl, coming into maturity during challenging times. In the beginning, she narrates events with a child’s sense of humor and innocence that carries the reader forward, into the stark political chaos that threatens everyone in her family. It gave me insight into historical era in the Dominican Republic that I had not been aware of.

Me encanta esta novela, La lei dos veces!

Midway into Antes de Ser Libre, I am enjoying it and Susanna Jansen’s accompanying packet of materials so much that I am eager to encourage other Spanish learners to explore both. I’m an intermediate learner who’s long been interested in adding reading worthwhile Spanish literature to my studies but had found it difficult finding sources whose material was complex enough to satisfy my interests but whose language met my level of Spanish comprehension. Between the novel itself, a combination political thriller and coming of age story, Antes de Ser Libre along with Ms.Janssen’s very helpful notes and background materials does both to my great satisfaction.

I’ve read “Yo No Soy Tu Perfecta Hija Mexicana” (a fun read and about my level) and I’m nearly done with “Antes de Ser Libres”, which I value for its historical value and a good read. I spend a little time every day reading and learning. I use digital format for the book, the resource package and the audible form. Love it all.

I have purchased 9 of Susanna’s packets and the corresponding novels. I have loved each of the stories and been absolutely delighted with each of the packets. Susanna’s packets have added a depth of understanding of the language and the culture that I would never have been able to achieve on my own. I cannot say enough wonderful things about Novelas En Español. I am so grateful to Susanna for having complied such detailed material which has enabled me to read and enjoy such a mixture of wonderful stories from across the Spanish speaking world. Susanna’s packets are an invaluable tool to any Spanish language learner that wants to improve their language skills and increase their vocabulary while reading some incredible Spanish literature.
