In this third book of his autobiographical series, Francisco Jiménez leaves behind his migrant worker existence to attend Santa Clara University. It is the story of how, as a young adult, he copes with poverty, anguish over separation from his family, guilt over leaving his parents and younger siblings financially strapped, and with his self-doubt about being able to succeed academically.
As in the first and second books of the series, Cajas de cartón and Senderos fronterizos, his account of experiencing everything far beyond the capacity of his younger self is honest, moving, and inspiring.
