This is the compelling story of a farmworker family existence in Southern California of the fifties, as told in the voice of the boy Francisco Jiménez. The family endures poverty and squalid conditions as they follow the harvests from one town to the next. “Panchito” starts work in the fields while still a small child and struggles to learn English and stay in schools despite constant challenges and the fear of deportation.
This is a good choice for intermediates with limited experience reading in Spanish.

I love this product! The author is a fantastic teacher and her notes provide context for the book and the vocabulary lists are essential. You simply can’t check a dictionary to understand some of the idiomatic phrases or unusual word usage. The resource package makes reading in Spanish possible, and reading in Spanish is a very effective and enjoyable way to study the language. As I read, I’m surprised at how much I understand — it builds my confidence. I love feeling like I’m reading a genuine, natural version of the Spanish language as used by native speakers rather than stilted grammer-based exercises you see in class.
