Cuatro días de enero

by Jordi Sierra i Fabra (Spain)
Novel, 284 pages

Barcelona 1939: Inspector Mascarell is the only officer remaining in the demolished and abandoned police station. Franco and his troops are about to conquer a city already brought to its knees by civil war, hunger, and fear. Among the few who have not fled the country, Mascarell agrees to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a young woman and, in the course of this last case of his long career, he discovers a sinister web of wealthy and ruthless fascists returning to mansions in the city, their criminality emboldened by the imminent arrival of the conquering forces.

This is an intensely personal portrait of the tragedy and desolation of war, but also of hope and courage, and an affirmation of the power of character, integrity, and dedication.

“Your novela packets are genius! They are a much needed additional reading material for the adult Spanish student. I am really enjoying ¨Cuatro días de enero ¨right now. His writing is so crisp I feel like I am in a movie.”

Your notes and research on Cuatro dias de enero have been wonderful and so helpful for me.
The book was difficult for me to read but with the help from your work I was able to enjoy the book a lot.
    Thank you,
    Mickey Pope

I enjoyed reading the book – the detective is such a sympathetic character, and the political context is so tense. Your vocabulary list helped immensely. One great thing about the experience was your recommendation to buy a big, fat weight-lifter’s dictionary: I love the Merriam-Webster-Webster International Dictionary! I see that this book is first in a series, and I will try the next one.

I am in a Spanish book club that formed from an ISSI (Intensive Spanish Summer Institute) literature class I attended last year. We recently voted to read “Cuatro días de enenro” and one of the members recommended buying Susanna’s packet. While the book is very interesting, it is at a higher level than I’m used to reading. Susanna’s packet is invaluable. It not only includes a page-by-page list of new vocabulary, there is background information about the Spanish Civil War that has helped me understand who is fighting who and why, as well as a list of characters. I would not be able to keep up with this book without Susanna’s packet!

A great packet rich in resources. “Cuatro días de enero” embodies the best of historical fiction–a page-turner police-detective novel that puts the reader inside the personal hardships facing the people of Barcelona in the last days of the Spanish Civil War. The packet with its explanations, links and articles provides excellent additional orientation to that very complex and historically significant conflict. The “vocabulary” Susanna provides is not just a list of words and their translations–I really appreciate the phrases that I would never understand otherwise, and the whole paragraphs when the book refers to something unfamiliar to non-Spaniards. That eliminates a lot of frustration! Add the questions specific to each chapter that provide food for thought, and it’s like having your own private professor on paper.

My Spanish book club is reading Cuatro días de enero, and the resource package is enormously helpful. Susanna has provided a wealth of information about the Spanish Civil War, prior wars and other events referenced in the book to help understand the political and historical context. The listed vocabulary and expressions in page order are also tremendously useful.
